Extra Refuse
Learn about the size, weight, and scheduling requirements for disposing of extra or oversized refuse. Ensure proper removal and avoid additional charges with Alaska Waste.
- LidCarts with the lid not completely closed may be subject to additional refuse charges.
- Odd Sized TrashOdd sized trash must be contained or bundled and measure less than 4 feet in length or width or height and weigh no more than 60 pounds.
- Additional BagEach additional bag or box set beside the cart must not exceed 32 gallons in size or weigh more than 50 pounds. These are subject to an extra charge.
- Large Sized ItemsLarge and odd-sized items can be removed with prior scheduling. Contact your Alaska Waste office to arrange pickup and discuss pricing.

Bear-Resistant Trash Solutions for Kodiak Island
In 2020, Alaska Waste introduced 96-gallon bear-resistant carts for all residential customers under the Kodiak Island Borough’s solid waste contract. These carts help keep trash secure and wildlife safe.
Please note:
- Do not overload the roll cart.
- The lid should be secured at all times.
- Please avoid putting salmon in the cart.

In addition, the Kodiak Island Borough has designated the following streets as “bear aware” zones as part of recommendations from the Solid Waste Advisory Board.
Residents on these streets now use shared dumpsters:
- Hillside Drive
- Lightfoot Avenue
- Oak Street
- Gerasim Drive
- Sharatin Road
- Selief Lane
- Mylark Lane
- Lynden Way
- Bonaparte Circle
- Mozart Circle

Prepare Your Cart Properly
• Ensure roll cart lids are closed and handles face your house.
• Label the cart with your street address if your house number isn’t visible from the road.
Place Carts on Time
Place carts at the curb by 6:00 AM on collection day, at least 3 feet from objects like other carts and 5 feet from the drivable roadway, free of obstacles like vehicles, snow piles, or ditches.
Maintain Clearance Around Carts
Keep at least 3 feet of space around carts, and avoid placing them near postal collection areas. Refer to the city's ordinance for secure trash zones.

Residential Guidelines

- Special Handling• Glass must be labeled and double wrapped (preferably with paper and plastic bags) when placed at the curbside as extra refuse.
• Any animal or fish waste must be securely double-bagged. A maximum quantity of ten pounds will be accepted in any one container per week. - Roll Carts Cannot Exceed 150 Pounds.Due to safety and tariff restrictions, roll carts cannot exceed 150 pounds.

As part of Alaska Waste’s 2020 contract with the Kodiak Island Borough, we are providing bear-resistant carts to all residential customers. They are 96-gallon Rehrig Pacific carts.
Don't Put Hazardous Waste in Your Bin!
Alaska Waste is not licensed to haul hazardous waste. Please contact your local Alaska Waste office if you are not sure if an item is acceptable for collection by Alaska Waste.
- Alaska Waste is Not Licensed to Haul Hazardous WasteHazardous waste cannot go in your curbside bin. Take household hazardous waste to the landfill (1203 Monashka Bay Rd), Monday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The first forty pounds are free. Also, the borough holds a household hazardous waste disposal event every year, usually the first Saturday in May. - Hazardous Materials Not AcceptedDo not place rocks, dirt, hazardous waste or ashes (hot or cold) in any Alaska Waste container.
- Responsibility for Your Collection ItemsResidents are responsible for the items they place out for Alaska Waste collection.

• To cancel service, please contact your local Alaska Waste office at least 1 week prior to the desired last day of service.
• Set cart out on the date agreed to during cancellation process.
